PhD in Clinical Nutrition
PhD in Clinical Nutrition
The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences offers this program as the highest academic and research degree, aiming to prepare scientific leaders and innovative researchers in the field of clinical nutrition.
The program is designed to suit specialized graduates, as well as professionals from diverse medical, health, and agricultural backgrounds through flexible tracks that ensure high-quality outcomes.
Program Objectives
The PhD program aims to empower researchers to produce original knowledge that contributes to the development of global nutrition protocols. It seeks to deepen analytical capabilities in linking molecular pathways with clinical outcomes and to qualify graduates to lead research teams in university hospitals and international centers.
Enrollment Tracks and Bridging Plans
The university has designed two main admission tracks, with detailed supplementary requirements for each specialization to bridge any knowledge gaps:
Track 1: Direct Track
Targeted at holders of a Master’s degree in "Clinical Nutrition." Students transition directly to the advanced coursework and research phase.
Track 2: Interdisciplinary Track
Targeted at Master’s degree holders from various disciplines, who undergo a detailed preparatory year:
-
Physicians and Surgeons: Their track focuses on applied food sciences, food composition, and advanced nutritional assessment skills.
-
Pharmacists and Clinical Pharmacy Specialists: Their track focuses on in-depth pathophysiology, nutrition for special groups, and clinical meal planning techniques.
-
Laboratory Diagnostic and Clinical Biochemistry Specialists: They study advanced clinical nutrition and pathology to link laboratory results with the patient’s clinical condition.
-
Biotechnology and Microbiology Specialists: They study human molecular metabolism, functional organ physiology, and principles of therapeutic nutrition.
-
Food Engineers and Agricultural Graduates (Food Science): They study human physiology, clinical biochemistry, and pathophysiology to link food substances to human disease.
-
Specialized Nursing Professionals: They study advanced biochemistry and metabolism, with a specific focus on advanced research methodology.
Intended Learning Outcomes (Program Outcomes)
By the end of this program, graduates will have acquired high-level skills enabling them to:
-
Research Innovation: Design and implement innovative clinical and field research addressing complex nutrition issues, with the ability to analyze big data using advanced statistical models.
-
Clinical Leadership: Develop and update clinical nutrition protocols in health facilities based on the latest scientific evidence (Evidence-Based Practice).
-
Advanced Specialization: Gain a deep understanding of the relationship between genes and food (Nutrigenomics) and how to apply it in designing "Personalized Nutrition" to combat chronic diseases and cancers.
-
Criticism and Analysis: The ability to evaluate local and international health and nutrition policies and provide scientific recommendations to decision-makers.
-
Scientific Communication: Publish robust scientific research in international peer-reviewed journals and present scientific theses at global conferences with high professionalism.
Career Opportunities and Paths
Obtaining a PhD in Clinical Nutrition opens broad professional horizons in vital sectors, including:
-
Academic Sector: Working as a university professor and lecturer in colleges of medicine, pharmacy, and health sciences.
-
Research Centers: Leading research teams in obesity, diabetes, and cancer research centers, and working as a senior researcher in medical and nutritional laboratories.
-
Health Management: Heading clinical nutrition departments in major hospitals and specialized medical centers.
-
International Organizations: Working as a consultant and nutrition expert for the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and international relief organizations.
-
Pharmaceutical and Food Industries: Working as a Research and Development (R&D) manager in companies producing nutritional supplements, functional foods, and medical formulas.
-
Private Consultancy: Establishing and managing specialized "Personalized" clinical nutrition centers and providing high-level medical nutritional consultations.
